5 Signs You Need a Roof Replacement in California

Your roof is not only the most important part of your home to keep in good shape but is also the part of your home people see the most.

While roof replacement is often obvious and easy to find, several signs you may not be aware of could indicate that you need a roof replacement in the first place. Don't disregard signs that you might need to replace your roof.

Take a look at what these telltale signs may actually mean in terms of a roof replacement.

1. Roof Leaks
One of the most common signs that you may need a new roof is when your roof leaks. The first thing to do when you suspect your roof could be leaking is to take a look around the house for signs of drafts or water damage.

Take a look at your roof from the outside. Is your roof in the best shape it can be? Is there damage to the shingles or other parts of the structure? If so, talk with a contractor about getting a replacement.

You might want to consider hiring a professional roofer who can inspect your home and assess the damage, then provide an estimate on what it will cost to replace the roof.

2. Roof Rot

If you have roof rot, you should replace your roof. Roof rot is usually caused by water entering your home through cracks and holes in your roof where rain can seep through your attic insulation.

Roof rot can cause leaks and structural damage, or lead to mold and mildew growth. To check for signs of roof rot, check around all wood materials and the trim boards on your home's exterior walls for signs of cracking or splitting.
If you notice rotted wood materials or cracks or splits on the trim boards, prepare yourself for a roof replacement.

3. Sagging Rooflines
Another indicator you will need to replace your roof is a sagging roofline. Rooflines should be solid and straight. If you notice visible sagging, curving, or dipping, you must call a professional roofer to investigate the cause — sagging rooflines can result in a complete or partial cave-in.

While sagging rooflines can result from a framing issue, they can result from water-saturated roof decks. If sagging rooflines are accompanied by water damage, leaks, or shingle damage, you may require a roof replacement to fix the problem.

4. Old Roof
What is the lifespan of your roof? A roof's lifespan might range from 20 to 100 years, depending on the type of your roof and the roofing materials. To determine how long your roof can last, check when it was installed.

If your roof is approaching the end of its lifespan, keep a keen eye on it and prepare yourself for a new roof. The older your roof gets, the more likely that you'll need to replace it at some point in the near future.

5. Storm Damage
Storm damage is another main reason for roof replacements. This is because powerful storms can damage your roof regardless of their pre-storm condition. Storm damage is a severe problem for people living in areas prone to hurricanes, tornadoes, ice storms, and even rainstorms.

If your roof is hit hard by a storm or shows signs of damage, you must act quickly. If caught early enough, you can repair storm-damaged roofs without replacing the entire roof.

However, schedule an inspection with an established roofing company to determine whether you need a roof replacement or if a repair would be enough to fix the problem.
