Tile Roofing in San Diego

Concrete and clay tile roofs are part of San Diego’s look, and the tiles themselves can last for many decades. The weak point is what sits underneath. The underlayment that actually keeps water out usually wears out long before the tile does, which is why many tile roofs leak even when every tile on top looks fine. Since 1994, our family-owned team has completed more than 30,000 roofs across San Diego County and earned 1,500+ five-star reviews.

Tile Re-Lays: New Underlayment, Same Tile

In a tile re-lay we carefully remove the existing tile, replace the underlayment, battens where needed and flashing, then reinstall your sound tile and replace any broken pieces. You keep the look of your home and get a new waterproofing layer underneath. It is often more affordable than a full tile replacement.

Tile Roof Repair

We repair cracked, slipped and missing tile, worn valleys, failed flashing around chimneys and skylights, and leaks from aging underlayment in specific areas. Our crews know how to walk and work on tile without breaking more than they fix. Need a repair on another roof type? See our San Diego roof repair services.

Concrete Tile vs Clay Tile

Concrete tile is the most common tile in San Diego. It is durable, comes in many profiles and colors, and usually costs less than clay. Clay tile keeps its color for decades and gives a classic Spanish or Mediterranean look. Both are Class A fire rated in most installations, which matters in neighborhoods near open space. We will help you choose based on your home, budget and HOA rules.

Tile Roofs and Solar Panels

Installing solar on tile takes specialized mounts and careful flashing to avoid leaks. Because we install both roofing and solar, we can re-lay or replace your tile and install solar in one coordinated project. Read more about solar panels on clay tile roofs and whether to replace your roof before going solar.

Tile Roof Questions

How do I know if my tile roof needs a re-lay?

Leaks with no broken tile, stains on ceilings, and an underlayment that is brittle or torn when inspected are common signs. Our free drone inspection and hands-on check will show you the condition.

Can you match my existing tile?

We reuse your sound tile on re-lays and work to match replacement pieces as closely as possible. Availability of older tile profiles varies, and we will show you options before work starts.

Is tile fire resistant?

Most concrete and clay tile installations carry a Class A fire rating, the highest rating for roof coverings.

Can I walk on my tile roof?

We do not recommend it. Tile can crack under foot traffic if you do not know where to step. Leave inspections to a trained crew.
